Falling exports worry tanners

Falling exports worry tanners KARACHI: Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has expressed serious concern over the steep fall in exports of leather goods during the outgoing fiscal year.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, PTA Chairman Gulzar Firoz said that leather exports dipped 26pc, leather apparel and clothing 12.36pc, leather gloves 11.44pc and footwear 18.84pc.

The tanners guild expressed its disappointment in the government for failing to provide adequate support to the industry despite recommendations by the Association.

The chairman said the government failed to provide duty drawback rates and didn’t waive customs duty on the import of raw hides.

The leather industry also demanded zero-rating of local taxes on export in the form of drawback in local taxes and levies (DLTL) at 5pc which should be reimbursed through banks.

It also demanded the inclusion of high value “finished leather” in SRO 415(I)/2015 for availing the incentives in Freight on Board (FOB) value on incremental increase in exports.

The chairman urged the commerce ministry to look into the matter at the earliest and hold parleys with the leather sector to protect against such future declines.
