LAHORE: The Lahore High Court issued notices on Thursday to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his wife Kalsoom, sons Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, daughter Maryam Nawaz and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on an application seeking an inquiry into the offshore assets allegedly owned by the ruling family.
Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffrey filed the civil miscellaneous application in a pending petition about foreign assets of at least 64 politicians and other prominent personalities.
He alleged that Nawaz Sharif and members of his family had concealed their assets and evaded tax. He also accused the family of transferring money (to foreign countries) through illegal means and (using the funds) establishing their businesses out of Pakistan.
Since the Sharif family had misled the nation, it had no moral or legal ground to hold public offices, Mr Jaffrey contended. Justice Mohammad Khalid Mahmood Khan heard the arguments and issued notices to respondents. Hearing was adjourned until April 18.
