Mamnoon for tapping GB’s hydel potential GILGIT: President Mamnoon Hussain on Sunday called for deriving maximum benefits from hydropower potential of Gilgit-Baltistan.

He was speaking at a briefing on the power generation projects in Skardu.

He said development would pick up in Gilgit-Baltistan once it was linked with the national grid. He underlined the need to increase electricity generation to pass on the benefits of economic progress to the local people.

Mr Hussain said the region could greatly benefit from the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. On the occasion, Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Mir Ghazanfar Ali, Chief Minister Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Minister for Water and Power Haji Akbar Taban and senior officials were also present.

Sources said Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman briefed the president about the power shortage in the region. He said GB had the potential to generate 50,000 megawatt of hydro electricity from the rivers flowing across the region.

President Mamnoon Hussain arrived in Skardu on a two-day visit on Saturday. He visited historical and tourist points, including Shigar Fort, Sadpara Lake, Shangrila and other areas of the Baltistan region on Sunday. Security in Skardu city has been tightened for the president‘s visit.

SABOTAGE BID FOILED: The Gilgit police claimed to have foiled a sabotage bid by arresting two alleged terrorists and recovering a huge quantity of arms and ammunition and police uniforms from them, during a raid in Juglot area on Sunday morning.

Police said search for the arrest of a third suspected terrorist was continuing. The seizure included Kalashnikovs, bullets, pistols, knives, shotguns and police uniforms.

Gilgit SSP Rana Mansoor told media persons on a tip-off by intelligence agencies, a team of Gilgit police led by additional SP Mohammad Muhiuddin and SHO Juglot raided a house and arrested two suspected terrorists along with arms and ammunition. He said the arms were to be used for carrying out a sectarian attack in Gilgit. Mr Mansoor identified the suspected terrorists as Asim Khan of Mansehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Nasurallh of Juglot. He said the fleeing suspect also belonged to Juglot.
