Model Town’s dark chapter

LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek Chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri says Nawaz Sharif and his dynastic politics will be exterminated from the country and the Sharif family will not be able to take refuge anywhere except India.

Addressing Nawaz Sharif and his family members, Dr Qadri asserted: “Justice, accountability and qisas will be held and they (rulers) will be brought to book.”

He said not only PAT but all opposition parties were demanding ‘qisas’ in the Model Town tragedy.

Dr Qadri was making a telephonic address (from Model Town) at PAT’s ‘Qisas march and sit-in’ at Charing Cross on The Mall, which was joined in by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid workers in large numbers on Saturday. The march started from GPO Chowk and was joined in also by the workers of the PPP, the MWM, the Sunni Ittehad Council and other opposition parties.

Opposition parties throw their weight behind movement

The PAT has launched movement simultaneously in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

Dr Qadri said the PAT had formally begun the movement to get qisas of the blood of those 14 innocent people killed by the Punjab police at the behest of Shahbaz Sharif and hold those named in the Panama Leaks accountable.

Saying that the rulers should see enthusiasm of his workers even in his absence, the PAT chairman announced that he would soon join the movement and ensure that the killers and the corrupt, who looted national wealth, be arrested and brought to book.

The nation should decide now whether they need Islamic Republic of Pakistan or “Sultanat-i-Sharifia”, where bureaucracy had been privatised and institutions such as NAB, FBR and police were being treated as personal properties. He regretted that the system of checks and balances had been eliminated from the law of the land. He said justice was not being dispensed to the poor and oppressed.

Dr Qadri said the prime minister had started doling out billions of rupees to his party MNAs and MPAs in the name of development funds. He also claimed that the rulers were giving incentives to their party workers as a reward for defending them at all forums.

Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed said the PML-N cronies’ mean tactics could not save Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the rulers would soon be sent packing. He also said the chief minister would eventually be held accountable for killing of 14 innocent people in Model Town.

Mr Rasheed said all opposition parties were united on holding the rulers accountable for Model Town tragedy, exposing rulers’ corruption and probing Panama Leaks. He said the police and Elite Force were busy protecting the rulers and poor masses had been left suffering at the hands of criminals. Unscheduled loadshedding had rendered them unable to make both ends meet, he added.

PML-Q’s Senator Kamil Ali Agha, Chaudhry Zaheeruddin and other opposition leaders also spoke.
