KARACHI – Sindh Rangers yesterday arrested Muttahida Qaumi Movement Coordination Committee’s deputy convener Shahid Pasha and took him into 90 days of preventive custody.

Pasha was taken into custody during a paramilitary force’s overnight raid on his residence in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

The raid, according to the witnesses, was carried out at around 3am over his alleged involvement in target killings and other criminal activities.

The accused was later produced before the court for 90-day remand.
After grant of remand, Rangers shifted the accused to Mitha Ram Hostel for further investigations.

Pasha is the third senior leader booked by Rangers and taken into preventive custody.
Earlier, MQM senior leaders Amir Khan and Qamar Mansoor were taken by Rangers into 90-day preventive custody, however, another senior leader Kaiful Wara was also detained during a raid at MQM’s headquarters Nine-Zero but he was released shortly after that.

Meanwhile, the MQM has condemned the arrests of its deputy convener Shahid Pasha terming the allegations levelled against him false.

Party’s Coordination Committee, in a press statement, also termed the arrest a continuation of anti-MQM policies by the establishment demanding immediate release of Pasha.

“For the last 30 years, the people from urban Sindh have shown their trust in the party and elected MQM men in every elections yet the establishment is not accepting our mandate and continuously subjecting the party to state brutality and torture,” said the MQM in a statement.

The MQM demanded of the president, prime minister, chief justice and the army chief to take notice of the allegedly illegal, unconstitutional and undemocratic means to create fissures in the party saying the series of arrests and cases against its workers and leaders be brought to an end.

“Similar to the past, the state conspiracies to create divisions in the MQM have failed and instead the party is getting stronger and popular,” the statement further said.

It also said that the party was busy in cleaning up the city, but the establishment was answering this public service by lodging fake cases against its workers and arresting its leaders.
